Activities to do on the Indigenous Experience Tour

Visit to the Huitoto Community

The day begins with a 40-minute drive from Leticia to the community of Tacana, inhabited by the Huitoto ethnic group. Upon arrival, we will be welcomed at the maloca by a community elder, a wise man with vast experience and ancestral knowledge.

Here, we’ll learn about the process of making mambe, ambil, and rapeseed, products derived from the coca leaf, and we’ll have the opportunity to try them if we wish. The grandfather’s explanation will allow us to understand the cultural and spiritual importance of these products for the Huitotos.

Jungle Exploration

After our introduction to Huitoto culture, we will head into the jungle for an educational hike. We will observe the flora and fauna that the Amazon rainforest has to offer, including monkeys, birds, medicinal plants, and timber trees.

This activity allows us to connect deeply with nature and understand its importance to local communities.

During the walk, we will learn about the traditional uses of plants and trees, and how they have been a fundamental part of Huitoto life for generations.

Typical Lunch in the Maloca

At noon, we will return to the maloca to enjoy a typical Huitoto lunch. This meal will offer us an authentic culinary experience, based on local ingredients and traditional recipes.

The dishes prepared by the women of the community will allow us to savor the culinary richness of the Amazon and better understand their diet and eating habits.

Swimming in the River and Fishing

In the afternoon, we’ll head to the river for a refreshing swim in the tubing, followed by some fishing. These water activities will allow us to relax and enjoy the natural environment in a fun and refreshing way.

Fishing is not only a recreational activity, but also a way to learn about traditional fishing techniques used by indigenous people, who will teach us how they use their ancestral skills to support their families.

Dinner and Night Walk

As night falls, we will return to the maloca for dinner and a little rest before our evening walk. Dinner will also be a traditional culinary experience, giving us energy for the exciting exploration that lies ahead.

The meal will be accompanied by stories told by the wise men, who will share legends and myths of the jungle, enriching our understanding of their culture.

During the night walk, we will observe the jungle’s nocturnal wildlife, including night monkeys, birds, and various species of frogs. If we are lucky, we might also see tarantulas and snakes.

At one point during the tour, Grandpa will ask us to turn off our flashlights and immerse ourselves in the darkness and silence of the jungle, allowing us to hear the sounds of the animals and admire the luminous mushrooms and moon leaves that glow in the dark. This moment will be a unique opportunity to connect with the natural environment in a deep and spiritual way.
