Amazonian Biodiversity: Life for Our Planet
Biodiversity is the variety of life that exists in our ecosystems.
Ecosystems are communities of living beings that share the same habitat.
The Amazon rainforest is an ecosystem of various living beings and has the greatest biodiversity in the world. It covers approximately 40% of South America and is attended by eight participating countries: Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Venezuela, Guyana, Suriname, and a French overseas province, Guyana.
It supplies moisture, influences rainfall and contributes to the stabilization of the global climate. All kinds of animals, insects, amphibians, plants and some other microorganisms that we do not perceive develop their lives in it.
Why is the Amazon’s biodiversity so important to the planet?
The Amazon basin generates between 16% and 20% of the planet’s fresh water, contains 25% of terrestrial biodiversity, more fish species than any other river system, 6,000 animal species, and at least 40,000 plant species, according to the World Bank’s May publication. According to the Wildlife Fund (WWF)
The Amazon rainforest generates at least 10% of the planet’s oxygen. Part of the Amazon’s wealth lies in its population and diversity; it is home to 34 million people, at least 86 languages, and 650 dialects, according to UN Environment, 2016.
Since 1970, a forest area larger than the entirety of France has been lost in Brazil alone. Greenpeace data
The Amazon is a vital life system essential to ecological balance and therefore requires the utmost attention for its conservation. For this reason, we seek to support measures that countries, both individually and collectively, can contribute and that are appropriate and efficient.
Trying to save the world’s largest rainforest is no longer an option; it’s an obligation!
Our planet is life. Everything is alive, from the smallest animal to the largest plant
